How We Evaluated the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra
We did not pretend to run a private laboratory. This article combines Roborock’s published specifications with independent testing from PCMag and RTINGS. That distinction matters: manufacturer figures describe intended capability, while independent testing shows how a robot behaves on real floors, carpets, corners, and everyday obstacles.

The RockDock Ultra Is the Main Attraction
The robot itself is only half the story. The RockDock Ultra is an all-in-one station that automatically empties the robot’s dustbin, washes the mop, dries the mop with warm air, and refills the robot’s internal water tank. Roborock also says the dock can self-clean, which reduces—but does not eliminate—the need to wipe and rinse parts manually.
Roborock says the dust bag can last up to seven weeks, depending on usage and the home environment. RTINGS warns that real life may be shorter in a dusty home or a house with several pets. Think of seven weeks as a manufacturer estimate, not a calendar appointment carved in stone.
PCMag measured the dock’s clean-water tank at 3.5 liters and the dirty-water tank at 2.9 liters. Roborock says the clean tank can support mopping more than 300 square meters under its internal test conditions. Your result will change with floor type, water flow, cleaning frequency, and how often the robot returns to wash the pad.
The dock is also big. PCMag lists it at about 16.7 by 20.2 by 17.7 inches. Before buying, measure the floor area, ceiling clearance, and the open space in front of the station. A premium robot that cannot open its dock properly is an expensive piece of modern sculpture. 📏
Vacuum Performance: Strong, Especially With Pet Hair
The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra uses a DuoRoller Riser system with two rubber brush rolls that rotate in opposite directions. Roborock says this improves pickup and reduces hair tangles, while the brushes can lift during selected cleaning modes. The official product page lists HyperForce suction up to 6,000Pa.
RTINGS found good debris pickup on hard floors and excellent pet-hair pickup on low-pile carpet. The twin rubber rollers are particularly useful for homes with shedding dogs or cats because rubber rollers are easier to clear than traditional bristle brushes. RTINGS still found that fine debris can remain near walls, corners, and deep carpet fibers.
PCMag’s testing was more broadly positive across laminate, tile, wall-to-wall carpet, and area rugs. The robot covered rooms in an organized pattern and did not get stuck during that review. The balanced conclusion is simple: the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra is a strong everyday vacuum, but no robot eliminates the occasional edge pass with a normal vacuum.
Mopping: Excellent Convenience, Not a Substitute for Deep Scrubbing
Roborock’s VibraRise 2.0 system uses two vibration modules and a washable mop cloth. Roborock says the mop can vibrate up to 3,000 times per minute and lift about 5mm when carpet is detected. The company also says the system applies consistent pressure while scrubbing.
In practice, the strength is convenience. The robot can vacuum and mop in the same routine, return to the dock to wash its pad, refill its water, and dry the pad afterward. PCMag found that the automatic mop washing removed most of the grime from the cloth, while the warm-air dryer left it dry by morning.
The limitation is stubborn stains. RTINGS rated stain removal as merely adequate and found that dried-on messes may need more than one pass. A robot mop is best for maintaining clean floors and handling ordinary daily marks; it is not a tiny janitor with a legal obligation to remove every dried piece of spaghetti.
Carpet owners should pay close attention. The mop lifts only about 5mm and is intended for low-pile carpet up to roughly 4mm according to Roborock’s product notes. Medium- and high-pile rugs may still touch the damp pad. PCMag also noted that the mop mounting plate is not detachable, which makes this design less attractive for homes with lots of plush carpeting.
A Note About Hard Floors
PCMag reported seeing shallow scratches on laminate during testing at a high scrubbing setting and after trying another mop pad. Roborock disputed that the robot caused the scratches and stated that its mop materials were tested not to damage floors. Because the reports conflict, cautious owners should begin with the lowest scrubbing setting, enable the app’s floor-direction option where appropriate, and test a hidden area first.
This is not a reason to assume the product will damage every floor. It is a reason to use sensible installation and testing practices, especially with delicate laminate, polished wood, or floors with existing surface wear.
Navigation and Obstacle Avoidance
The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combines PreciSense LiDAR mapping with structured light and infrared imaging. Roborock says Reactive 3D Obstacle Avoidance can identify and bypass objects as small as approximately 5cm wide and 3cm tall, including shoes, wires, clothing, and pet waste in suitable conditions.
LiDAR mapping is a genuine strength. The robot quickly creates room maps, supports room selection, virtual walls, no-go zones, and up to four maps for multi-level homes. Its app also lets you set different suction and mopping behavior for individual rooms.
Obstacle avoidance is more complicated. PCMag found it effective in its testing and reported that the robot could route around many common hazards. RTINGS’ newer test-bench review was much less enthusiastic: the robot can bump into or catch thin objects such as cables and socks, and its obstacle performance was rated mediocre overall. Therefore, do not treat the S8 Pro Ultra as permission to leave pet waste, Lego bricks, charging cables, or socks across the floor.
For pet homes, activate Pet Mode if available in your app and perform a quick floor check before scheduled runs. The robot is smart; it is not psychic. 🐕
The Roborock App Is Powerful but Busy
The app lets you save maps, divide and rename rooms, create no-go zones, schedule individual rooms, select cleaning order, adjust suction, choose water flow, set mop-washing frequency, and review cleaning history. It supports Alexa and Google Assistant voice control.
That flexibility is excellent for experienced users, but it can feel overwhelming on day one. Start with a complete mapping run, name the rooms, create no-go zones around cables or delicate objects, then create a simple daily routine. You do not need to understand every setting before the robot can clean the kitchen.
Maintenance and Real Ownership Costs
The dock removes much of the repetitive work, but the system still has consumable parts. RTINGS lists approximate replacement intervals of 150 hours for the filter, three to six months for the mop cloth, three to six months for the side brush, and six to twelve months for the brush rolls, depending on use. The disposable dock dust bag is advertised for about seven weeks of debris.
- Empty and rinse the dirty-water tank before odor develops.
- Check the mop cloth regularly, especially after cleaning kitchen spills.
- Remove hair from both brush rolls and inspect the bearings.
- Wipe the sensors and charging contacts with a clean, dry cloth.
- Replace filters, bags, brushes, and mop cloths according to the app’s maintenance reminders.
- Use only cleaning solution that Roborock approves for this model; PCMag reports that Roborock recommends its own branded solution rather than unapproved chemicals.
That maintenance is the trade-off for automation. The robot saves time, but replacement bags, pads, filters, and brushes add a recurring cost. If your priority is the lowest long-term expense, a simpler robot vacuum without a wash-and-dry dock may be a better value.

The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra is one of the most convenient robot vacuum-and-mop systems in its class. The RockDock Ultra empties dust, washes and dries the mop, and refills water; the dual rubber rollers perform especially well with pet hair; and the app gives you an impressive amount of room-by-room control.
Its weaknesses are equally important. The dock takes up substantial space, the mop does not fully clear taller carpet, maintenance costs continue after purchase, and independent testing has raised concerns about obstacle avoidance. Mopping is useful for daily maintenance but not a replacement for manual treatment of stubborn stains.
